Troublemakers and Dreamers

The Metaskill Dreaming (innovation or applied imagination) needs instruction at every level of an organization. For any company leader, a great place to source your training material is with the troublemakers and dreamers in your organization.  Yes, these people are a pain in a leader’s ass, but they might also be the only employee capable of creating a long-term growth strategy for your company.

In Metaskills: Five Talents for the Robotic Age, author Marty Neumeier masterfully paints a picture that describes why new training and new practices are needed to help companies survive.  As the Director of Transformation at Liquid Agency and author of related 3 best-selling books called The Brand Gap, ZAG and The Designful Company, Marty is unquestionably an expert in this field.  According to Marty, the five biggest talents for the Robotic Age are:

Feeling (empathy)
Seeing (systems thinking)
Dreaming (innovation or applied imagination)
Making (prototyping)
Learning (the opposable thumb of all Metaskills, the ability to teach yourself something new)

In our first interview (podcast here), Marty and I covered all five Metaskills.  The feedback was amazing and we were both so grateful.  In response to several requests, Marty graciously agreed to record a second interview about the process of applied imagination, or Dreaming.

Excellent discussion. Thank you both for making this possible. One of the great things about the word “dreaming” is that it’s inherently disruptive to the current paradigm. The more people talk this way, the faster the tipping point will come.

Thanks for listening in Russ. I’m really glad you enjoyed it:) I agree with you, words like “Dreaming” should have a place in the hallways of organizations right there beside ROI.
